I think the author included these controversial topics to bring them to light. They are topics that aren’t talked about a lot but need to be because there are things in our system that aren’t right and need to be fixed.

I think the author chose these topics to attract more attention to them. This is so that we could learn about the topics through different points of views. Just how described in class that the bad person in a book wouldn’t typically be played by a white person like in this book.

The author includes controversial so it can open the readers eyes that some of the things still exist today. And how they are not a thing of the past.

I think the author included the topics because it gives insight on the life of an immigrant. Most people just automatically think negative about them or dont care for them at all. It shows they have lifes to and feelings and struggles just like everyone else.

The author included the controversial topics of all these characters to give us a good outlook and understanding of all the people in the story. The story about Maribel gives us that heart felt connection with a character that allow us to grow with her and her family throughout the story.

Garrett: Will Poulter because he has a mean white guy look.
Arturo: Antonio Banderas because he has a kind look and he looks like a dad.
Alma: Sofia Vergara because she is beautiful.
Maribel: Josie Loren because she has to resemble her mother.
Mayer: Jake T Austin because he is young
Celia: Shakira because she is hispanic and looks like a mom
Enrique: Enrique iglesias because he is a young man and looks like he needs a mommy.
Rafael: javier Bardem, he looks like a dad who needs a family.
I think he included them to add more diversity to the story to match with the different characters. Instead of a white people story, he wants to be diverse with the characters and topics. He also wanted us to see the life of an immigrant.

The author included them in order to make it so that we think more about whats going on. It would make us uncomfortable to face these topics head on and to talk about them and try to really understand it.

I think the author included controversial topics because they teach us both sides of the topic and we can lean from the characters and be more understanding of the topics in general. If we stop talking about them then change will never happen.

Many of the controversial topics the author included becuase its things that are going around in our country. when we’re within a circle we dont notice whats going on and we dont see how silly we look when we argue or fight. She lets us open our eyes and see how silly we look.

I think the author would add controversial topics to open the readers’ eyes. To show the reader that life isn’t just roses and clovers, but hate crime, and even racism. It’s a good way to wake a reader up from ignorance.

I think the author is touching on the controversial topics because they are reality and we need to talk about these type of topics. I am enjoying how Henriquez sheds light on the lives of these individuals and their struggles. I think the more we know the more we grow and the more we have compassion for others. Lives should not be taken at face value but realize that we are all created equal. There is a song I absolutely love and the lyrics sing, “The beggar and the King bleed the same.”
Arturo – Danny Trejo
Alma – Selma Hyak
Maribel – Selena Gomez
Rafael – Antonio Banderas
Enrique and May – the Jonas brothers
Fito Angelino – Michael Pena

I believe that the author added a lot of controversial topics to the novel because these topics go on in the real world today. Some do not like to talk about them or they try to ignore them. The author adds them to overall speak the truth and to bring more aware to these topics.
