“That girl-all of them-hated Eleanor before they’d even laid eyes on her. Like they’d been hired to kill her in a past life” (Rowell 11).When everyone looked at Eleanor for the first time no one seemed to like her, they didn’t want anything to do with her. She was a bit peculiar and in school if you are anything out of the ordinary you are considered weird. It can be extremely hard to make friends and especially when you come from a home where there isn’t any love.

Eleanor had just moved back with her so called family when she met park on the bus. The first day on school was awful for her starting from the very begging. Like when she first gets on the bus everyone judges her by her appearance and nobody wants her to sit with them. They all move their stuff so she passes thru the seats and everyone looks at her like she’s a weird creature. Even park didn’t like her and he tried not to look up at her as she walked through the aisles. Eleanor was “big and awkward. With crazy hair, bright red on top of curly. And she was dressed like…like she wanted people to look at her. Or maybe like she didn’t get what a mess she was”. (Rowell 8)

She was strange and was a little bigger than average and all the bulling got to her as time went on. I think her not feeling accepted in school affected the way she felt about herself, she always had doubts about herself. She had problems with body image and self acceptance and she didn’t receive much love. Eleanor never really had love therefore she never told park that she loved him. In her home she only had abuse starting from an early age. She had problems with self-love. She didn’t have anyone and she felt alone until she met park.

Eleanor came from a broken home. Her parents were separated and she had an abusive step father who didn’t care at all for her. Her mom wasn’t nurturing with her because she cared more about pleasing Richie than taking care of her oldest daughter. Eleanor was always pushed   aside when it came to family and she never really had peace or any kind of stable home. Her step dad Richie was abusive to Eleanor’s mom and the kids he would mistreat them and because Eleanor lived through all that I think that’s what made her leave and want to forget about everything.

I think her feelings started to change when she met park. He started letting her read his comic books that’s what brought them together.”She was reading his comics. At First Park thought he was imagining it. He kept getting this feeling that she was looking at him, but whenever he looked over at her, her face was down. He finally realized that she was staring at his lap. (Rowell 3)

As time went on they became friends and he would share his comics with her and she loved reading them because she didn’t have anything to do at home. She couldn’t wait to go back and see park the next day so they could talk about the comics. Park even started to share his walkman with her and they would listen to music. They slowly started to get closer and spend more time together. I think this was the only positive thing going on in Eleanor’s life. Park was everything to her but I think that because she had all these other problems that she couldn’t accept all the love that park wanted to give her.

At the very end they find out that it was Richie who was writing all these mean and inappropriate comments in Eleanor’s books. Richie finds out about park and they’re scared that he’s going to kill her. Park takes her to her uncle’s house in Minnesota. It was an all night drive and at the end they just said goodbye. He goes back home and doesn’t hear from her. Park writes her letters but she doesn’t even open them. “Sometimes she laid them out on the carpet like tarot cards, like wonka bars, and Wondered whether it was too late” (Rowell 323).

Eleanor in my opinion was pretty selfish towards the end. I feel that because she had all these problems she just decided to leave everyone behind including park. I don’t think she loved park because she basically forgot about him when she left. She didn’t care about parks feelings. Parked lover her way more that she did and she didn’t appreciate park enough to thank him for everything that he did for her.

When she decided to send Park something all she wrote was 3 words. I think she wrote I miss you. I don’t think she ever told Park she loved him. He waited so long to hear from her and it wasn’t much. I think he had his hopes up with Eleanor because she had to fix herself before she could really be with Park.
