Do you care about your sexual health? Healthcare is a major predominant to life, but one aspect of it that is overlooked and not talked about as often as it should be is sexual healthcare. “Over 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981. Approximately 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV today and about 1 in 7 of them (14%) are not even aware they are infected” ( A sexually transmitted disease (STD) is an infection transmitted through sexual contact, caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites. “STDs often cause death, infertility, chronic pain, birth defects, & miscarriages. Everyday 12,000 American teens contract an STD. 1 in 5 Americans have genital herpes. 90% don’t know it and don’t show signs. There are 750,000 teen pregnancies in the U.S. a year (2,000 a day). About 80% of teen fathers don’t stay with the mom. Every 45 seconds someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted” ( Planned Parenthood can help prevent these numbers and statistics. Planned Parenthood is an organization that does research into and gives advice on contraception, family planning and reproductive problems. Planned Parenthood is available to just about anyone and is most convenient for low income communities and typically teens who are sexually active. To this day, pro-life protesters are protesting and trying to convince the government to stop funding for planned parenthood due to “abortions” but what they cannot wrap around their heads and realize is planned parenthood provides so much more than an abortion pill; and not only is it beneficial for women, but also for men!! You think women are the only ones infected with a sexual transmitted disease or have access to testing for it? OF COURSE NOT!! Whether it is for a specific health concern or a general exam, men can go to planned parenthood for cancer screenings, vasectomies, infertility screenings, erectile dysfunction and premature ejactulation support and the list goes on. For many individuals, Planned Parenthood IS their primary health provider and the one they trust the most with their health care needs. Planned Parenthood includes preventive health care services such as well women exams, breast and cervical cancer screenings, vaccinations, and birth control. As a primary provider for low income communities, Planned parenthood is an important partner in providing high quality care to underserved communities. “In 2013, 78 percent of Planned Parenthood patients had incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level, which is $36, 375 a year for a family of four. Half of Planned Parenthood patients are covered through medicaid, which serves low income individuals and families” (familiesUSA). If the government ever decides to stop funding for planned parenthood, not only will they be taking away women’s rights to their body, but they would also be leaving thousands of patients without a health care provider because there is no guarantee that other health facilities will be able to serve these patients. “Pro-life activists will protest outside or more than 100 Planned parenthood locations on Saturday to urge President Trump to cut off a significant portion of the abortion giant’s taxpayer funding” (The Washington Times). Pro-life activists will literally stand outside of planned parenthood all day long and harasses every person that walks out of PPH; “Are you proud of terminating innocent lives” “you are a child murderer!” “you just killed your baby, how do you feel?” These are legitimate statements screeched out by people holding ‘pro-life’ posters, shouted at anyone who walks out of planned parenthood. Automatically assuming that every person walking out got an abortion. What about the men that walk out by themselves? Did they just get an abortion as well? This question is just as stupid as these nonconformists (SORRY). Planned Parenthood provides and helps prevent unplanned abortions. They do not advertise abortions nor encourage it. They are here to avert any unplanned pregnancies and offer more options before abortion even becomes an option. Why else would they offer free health care services to people in severe need of it? Not to encourage abortions I will tell you that! Also, for some clarity, birth control is NOT a form of an abortion pill. Birth control is the act of PREVENTING a pregnancy; key word PREVENT. These attacks on planned parenthood have affected the comprehensive care for many women, men, and young adults. Instead of these politically attacks on Planned Parenthood, the government should help work to protect, expand, and improve this program to keep families healthy. When Texas cut its Planned Parenthood funding, patient care was immensely affected. “At the state level, efforts to reduce or eliminate Planned Parenthood funding tell an even more concerning story about the potential impact of funding cuts. For example, in 2011, Texas cut its family planning budget by two-thirds and banned PPH from participating in the state’s Women’s Health Program. Before this, Planned Parenthood served nearly 50 percent of the program’s patients. By 2013, the number of women who received care through the Women’s Health Program had dropped by more than 50 percent” (familiesUSA). Pro-life activist are not taking to consideration that these defundings affect more than a teenage girl looking for an abortion. Without Planned Parenthood, families are left with bills they cannot afford due to being with an inappropriate provider that does not suit them, or families left with absolutely no health care provider. Planned Parenthood is the nations largest provider of sex education. It was originally founded on the idea that women, men and young people should be informed with the proper care they need to live strong healthy lives. Planned Parenthood is trying to generate the healthiest generation ever.
