The political landscape of modern day America is a battlefield overran with hate, on one side we have the Democratic Party and on the other the Republican Party, each going for the others throats. A problem that plagues America is our inability to have a civil discourse over issues we disagree on, it is extremely hard in today’s times to even try to have a conversation without being called a bigot, misogynist pig, and racist if you believe in anything remotely found on the right side of the aisle. Mean while you’ll be insulted with terms like snowflake, beta, and libtard if you find yourself believing in anything found on the left side of the field. Even if we may not like what the other side is preaching we should not under any circumstances let the actions of a few individuals be the standard on which on members belonging to that group be held to. Not all conservatives are fascists who want to oppress women as the same can be said that not all liberals are crazy feminists. A common misconception is that the other side is out to get you because they are inherently evil and want to hurt you, this is far from the truth, while yes there are people whose sole intention is to hurt others, that is not the case for the vast majority who are just doing what they think is right. A crucial part of being able to have a conservation is to go into such conservations with the notion that they are just trying to do what they think is right just as you are. Lacking that ability and assuming that everyone who disagrees with you is just attempting to make harm is will result in the conservation stagnating and going nowhere.

A great example of this are conservatives like Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder when it comes to the subject of abortion. They both hold a Pro-Life stance because they are against the termination of a human life for the sake of convenience for the parents. In a YouTube video by The Daily Wire, Shapiro states that “…that’s a baby you don’t get to kill it just because it’s convenient to you, you’re never right to say its my decision where and when and how to have the baby. That’s an individual human being and if that baby were outside the womb and you stuck a knife through its chest we’d would be charged with first degree murder. You kill it in the womb and we call it a human right. That’s not a human right because that’s a human and that human doesn’t have any rights because you just decided that its rights are less important than your right to your own convenience.”, that quote sums up what they believe as a whole. Are they truly the monsters the media would have you believe because they are Pro-Life? All they want to do is protect the lives of the innocent and help defend those who cannot yet speak for themselves. Is that truly an evil act? But no since they are both males you would be led to believe that they are only doing that to oppress women and take away the right to do what they want with their bodies. The other side also has a valid point, that being, how about the women who get raped or who face health implication? Are they bad or evil people? No, they aren’t they also are just doing what they think is right, same as the conservative side.

Another example is the topic of immigration, not every single conservative is against immigration itself, they are just skeptical of who exactly is coming into our country because we all know not everyone has the best of intentions. A similar event occurred in the 80’s with the Mariel Boatlift, thousands of Cuban refugees came to America and they were accepted into the nation. The landings hit Florida the most and homicide skyrocketed in the city of Miami because of the influx of refugees. Not every refugee was a criminal, but people still died as a result, so are conservative’s evil for fearing something similar occurring? No, they simply don’t want anyone to get hurt that’s where their premise stems from. On the other side of things are liberals accept immigrants freely due to the notion that they are coming here in the hopes of a better life. Are they wrong for wanting to extend a helping hand? Of course not! We’re suppose to help each other out. Once again both sides are just doing what they think is right and by no means is either side on the extreme ends of the subject to warrant skepticism.

A final big point is the issue of gun control. Conservatives are known to be pro-gun, is it because they are for school shootings? No, you would be hard pressed to find someone who genuinely thinks that more school shootings should occur. So why then? Conservatives believe that by stripping away the Second Amendment you are leaving law abiding citizens defenseless from those who wish to do harm to them and their families. Is that really a horrible notion to want to be armed to protect your family? Liberals are for more gun control because they don’t want people to die from guns. Again, you would be hard pressed to find someone who genuinely thinks, “yes we need more people to die.”. All in all, it really comes down to people who just think they are doing what is right.

It is imperative especially when so much hate is running rampant and being fueled by all these things we hear on the news and social media, that we all take a step back and consider where exactly people are coming from. Are they out with the intention to get me in some way? Or are they just doing what they think is right. It is when we are able to understand the position that an opposing view is coming from that only then are we going to be able to mend the wounds that run so deep within our nation. Only then can we have any hope in trying to compromise with each other and strengthen out country as a whole.
