Everyday people tragically die due to car accidents. There are several different reasons to what can cause a car accident. The cause may be reckless driving, driving under the influence, or distracted driving. In the music video “Frozen” by Joyner Lucas, different scenarios of car accidents are shown along with the story being told from the perspective of the victim. The three victims appear to be dead and are mouthing the lyrics as the artist sings them. The first scenario shows a little girl in the middle of the street covered in blood after being hit with a car by a woman who was texting and driving. The women who was texting and driving gets out of her car and begins to panic with disbelief as she sees what she has done.

While the little girl is laying on the floor “dead” she is listing the things she will never be able to do because her life was taken from her. The second scenario is a women sitting in the passenger seat of a car that was completely wrecked in a head on collision. As blood is running down her face she is also talking about all the things she will not be able to do anymore because she chose to get in the car with someone who was drunk driving. The last scenario is a man who is driving recklessly and speeding. His car appears to be flipped with him on the outside of the car injured. While he is laying on the ground “dead”, he talks about himself as a dare devil. He explains how he enjoyed reckless driving for the thrill. As he goes on he explains he took life for granted. He ends with “Oh my God I just died trying to race and drive”(Joyner). Towards the end of the video the song fades and the words “DRIVE SAFE” appear on the screen.

The message of this video is crystal clear. The artist uses pathos to convey his message of safe driving. Joyner Lucas did a great job in making the audience feel some type of emotion. Right from the beginning of the music video the little girl mouthing the lyrics of her story automatically makes you feel for her. “No more kisses from my daddy ’cause I left and died, All because this stupid bitch wanted to text and drive”(Joyner). Any daughter or father who watches this and listens to the story will feel sympathy for those who have lived through these types of tragedy. Throughout the video as the audience I was speechless. As I watched the video I just kept picturing myself or a loved one in those situations and it made me really think about the message that is trying to be sent.

“According to FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System) data from the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, the state of Texas had the most traffic fatalities of any state in the U.S. with 3,722. California had the second most fatal crashes with 3,602”(Safer America). Statistics show that tragic accidents like this happen everywhere everyday. “Nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day” (ASIRT). In the society we live in today young people tend to think they’re invincible or that something like this will never happen to them. A short rap music video is a perfect way to get a message like this out to young people. Joyner Lucas, a lyricist who raps about real world problems, uses his music to get people’s attention and get his message across to his audience. World wide, music is a form of expression. Through music you can show many emotions including; happiness, sadness, anger, or any other emotion you might feel. Music is a great way to relay a message to an audience because it is so popular.

“No more hangin’ with my friends, no more ridin’ bikes” (Joyner). “No more baby in my belly, sad to say we died. All because you choose to drink and drive,Why?”(Joyner). “No more taking life for granted I just wasted mines.” (Joyner). Throughout the song there is repetition of the words “no more” because these people chose to get behind the wheel and not drive safely, they have affected not only their lives but also the lives of others.
“Ain’t no way, ain’t no way you can go back”(Joyner). In the chorus of the song “no going back” is emphasized as well. The drivers will have to live with the consequences of ending someone’s life. They will never be able to do the things they once did daily or do the things they planned in the future. They no longer have a future because of the decisions the drivers made without thinking of the consequences.

We live our lives thinking we have so much time left, but in reality we never know when our last day is. This is real life. Just because things like this do not happen to the majority of us personally on a daily basis, does not mean it does not happen to others. Joyner Lucas used his platform to send an important message to drivers of any age everywhere, drive safe. A reply can wait, another drink is not worth it, or trying to impress those around us is not worth your life or the life of others.
