It is a period of civil war and the galaxy is consumed into darkness by the Galactic Empire. For decades, Emperor Palpatine, a Sith Lord, spreads darkness along with his fearsome enforcers and a planet-sized super weapon known as the Death Star. However a small band of freedom fighter, known as the Rebel Alliance, fight against this evil in order to restore peace once again to the galaxy. This is the state of the galaxy when Star Wars was first released May 25, 1997 introducing to the world the action pack science-fiction space opera. Little did audiences know they would be introduced to a being far terrifying and twisted that just by his breathing will have you on edge.
“Fear followed the footsteps of all the Dark Lords. The cloud of evil which clung tight about this particular one was intense enough to cause hardened Imperial troops to back away, menacing enough to set them muttering among themselves. Once resolute rebel crew members ceased resisting, broke and ran in panic at the sight of the black armor-armor which, though black as it was, was not nearly as dark as the thoughts drifting through the mind within. One purpose, one thought, one obsession dominated that mind now. It burned in the brain of Darth Vader as he turned down another passageway in the broken fighter.”
Darth Vader, as explained from Star Wars Trilogy novel, mere presence strikes fear among all his peers, enemies and onlookers who seen him. However from his nine minutes of screen time in a two hour film, audience were drawn to him not of fear but of desire. When the film was over many were blown away to this new science fiction, many began to dress up as the farm boy Luke Skywalker, tuff smuggler Han Solo, freedom fighter Princess Leia and most importantly the dark lord of the sith Darth Vader. Audience were curious of this black armored villain of how his micantic works and what is his role in the star wars universe. Then fans began to wonder where did Darth Vader come from. Luckily fans were able to see, what is now referred as the Prequel Trilogy, Star Wars Episode I, II, and III. We find out our monster was once known as a human named Anakin Skywalker, slave turned war hero, and tells the tragic tail of his downfall into the dark side of the force. Where he discovers loss, find ways to cope with his anger but evendenly is seduce to by the dark side of the force for the greater good.
Growing up Anakin Skywalker, soon to be Darth Vader, had a troubled life growing up. At a young age he was born into slavery on the backwaters of the twin suns of Tatooine which is located on the outer rim controlled by the violent gangster of the hutt clan. However unlike most kids around him, he was very bright and had a keen sense of helping those in need. “ I may not like it, but he [Anakin] can help you…he was meant to help you.” (Star Wars) His life would change on the day when a strange man, mysterious alien and an angel walked into his owners, Watto’s repair shop looking for some parts. He felt attracted towards the angel and stirred up a conversation finding out her name is Padmé. He learns the stranger is Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, and a gungan named Jar Jar Binks. Master Qui-Gon frees young Anakin from his slave master and promises him he will be train in the ways of the Force as a Jedi, a dream come true to the young boy. Despite the disagreement of the Jedi Council of Anakin being too old for training, they do grant the permission to train him but only if Obi-Wan Kenobi, the padawan learner of Master Qui-Gon, teaches the boy. However Qui-Gon will never see the feretion of his training due to shortly after he is killed by a Sith Lord named Darth Maul who is evenly cut in half by Obi-Wan.This is the starting point where young skywalker will experience lost for the first time of someone close to him.
During his teen years, he was experiencing emotions that the Jedi Order normally warn padawans to be weary of. As spoken by the wise Jedi Master Yoda, “Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear lead to Anger. Anger leads to Hate. Hate leads to Suffering.” Anakin’s inability to control his emotions proves to be his spiral downfall to the darkside. Already fearing his new required responsibilities as a padawan and never truly knowing how to suppress his anger, feeling as though he is failing his master, Obi-Wan, and haunted dreams about his mother, Anakin is condemn to follow his instincts and deal with the consequences. Tragic events will eventually come to him when on a mission to protect the Senator Padme Amidala, he visit his mother on his home planet to discover she was sold once again, marries and then abducted by Tusken Raiders, who are violent aliens on his home world. He finds her but only to have her die in his arms. Enrage by this he slaughters all of them. Not just the men of the Tusken tribe but the women and the children too. He does confess of his action but not to the Jedi Council but to his love interest Padme showing that he feels guilt of his action. Unfortunately Anakin and Padme do fall in love and eventually marries in secret hiding it from the rest of the galaxy as the galaxy plunges into war.
The Clone Wars, which was a three year conflict, pitted the Galactic Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems which was a ruse set up by the Sith Lord Sidious part of his goal to destroy the Jedi Order. These conflicts showed the horror of war and battle after battle Anakin was shown to be a war hero among the Republic. As a general he was compassionate to his men, the 501st battalion, his Jedi Brother Obi-Wan Kenobi and to his padawan Ahsoka Tano. These three drew a connection of a strong bond and watched out for each other on the battlefield. Sometimes war draws out the worst in all those involved and many times it turn friends to foes. One day news reach Anakin that his padawan was to stand trial for a murder she commited and was now on the run. Convince she was innocent he sought out to find the culprit and bring whoever it was to justice to clear his student’s name. Investigations lead him to the temple to confront Ahsoka friend, Barriss Offee, and fight lightsaber to lightsaber on the sacred grounds. Ahsoka name was cleared but believing how everyone, expect her master Anakin, gave up on her she did not want to return to the Jedi Order. Saying goodbye to him and confronting him how she knows how he feels about also leaving the order but has his reasons to remain. Further building up the fears of losing everything he gained so far and wants to protect.
Once returning back from defeating the Separatist leader Count Dooku, turning the tide of the war, and rescuing Chancellor Palpatine, Anakin receives news from his wife Padme that she is pregnant. Soon he receives dreams or vision of his wife dying during childbirth and haunting images. He’s fears once again rise similar to his visions before his mother death and not knowing what to do, he thinks of alternative motives. The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some considered to be unnatural. It can even save those we care about from death. These words spoken to the young Jedi Knight in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith by Chancellor Palpatine, dwells in his mind as he thinks about ways to save his wife. Surprisingly the Sith Lord the Jedi Order was looking for was the Chancellor all along who reveals himself to Anakin. Unknowingly what to do, either strike him down, following his duties as a Jedi, or reconsider and have him arrested with help of the masters to learn his secrets. He goes and informs the masters and was told to wait at the temple till they return. Conflicted that he made the wrong decision he goes back to the Senate building and finds Master Mace Windu hovering over the Chancellor stating he is beaten. Anakin pleads with Windu to let him live but before Windu made the final blow, he cut off his hand and Palpatine electrocutes him out the window. Believing there is no turning back now, he will follow the ways of the dark side and obey his new master orders to save his wife now becoming the being known as Darth Vader.
Darth Vader was ordered to wiped out all remaining Jedi in order to gain the ability to use the dark side of the force. Obeying his master’s orders, Darth Vader, along with his 501st battalion, march to the Jedi Temple and kills every master and student, leaving no survivors. He is then order to kill all remaining Separatist Leaders on the volcanic planet Mustafar. Once he arrives, without hesitation he slaughters every single one of them to bring peace to the galaxy. He does have a moment of reflection shedding tears of what he is becoming, a monster, but in all to protect his wife. Surprisingly to him, he is confronted by his wife on the volcanic planet and she somehow knows of all of his misdeeds. She begs him to stop what he is doing for things to go back as they once were. Now overcome by power he speaks to her of overthrowing the chancellor and they can rule the galaxy as they want no longer hiding in the shadows. Stepping in is Anakin’s Old Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, seeing him for what he is becoming the very thing he swore to destroy, a Sith Lord. Believing Padme betrayed him, he force chokes her until she is unconscious and blames Obi-Wan for turning her against him. These old friends duel to the death but eventually Obi-Wan receives the high ground warring Anakin to stop this the fight is now over. “You underestimate my Power” are the fatal words Anakin says to his previous master before he loses his arm and legs. In pain he shouts how he hates him from taking everything from him and then starts to burn. After retaining conscious he finds himself on a operating table, in now the iconic black suit that is keeping him alive. He finds out that in his rage he was the one that ended up killing his Padme. With now his happiness gone, he no longer feels anything toward anyone. Only for himself does he empower himself alongside with his master to rule the galaxy as Darth Vader.
The circle is now complete, when we were first introduced to Darth Vader he was nothing but an agent of evil but now we see him as a tragic hero who only wanted to do was he felt was right. With this revelation in mind many fans still idolize Darth Vader on the way he present himself, doing things that is normally frowned upon and strive to make himself known. A desire many fans would consider in doing but understands the consequences. We have to understand that in order for Darth Vader to become as he is, then Anakin had to lose people in his life, was driven on the fear of loss unable to control his emotions and eventually give into his hatred from reacting from wars and experiences. As mention the person known as Anakin Skywalker was weak and was destroyed by Darth Vader. Separating himself into two people completely consumed by the dark side of the force.

This article depicts seven theses presented by Jeffrey Cohen about the embodiment of what a monster can represent. Each of one of these theses predicts a monster is created by our own representation of what a monster could be and embodies society’s fears, inspiration and control. For this paper I will be using methods of the Monster Thesis VI: Fear of the Monster Is Really a Kind of Desire, stating that the type of things these monster can perform or look is secretly what we desire to do or become.
