The Force will be with you … always.
OBI-WAN KENOBI, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
The Force “ It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together” This was said by Obi-Wan Kenobi in the movie Star Was: A New Hope while he was introducing this to Luke Skywalker. He mentions how the “Force” is all arounds us and binds the galaxy together. It still this same “Force” that has captivated many Star Wars aficionados ‘till this day. Especially nowadays with many of them waiting eagerly for any new media of the newest upcoming movie Star Wars: The Last Jedi. On July 14th through the 16th of 2017, Disney held their fifth D23 expo in the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA. This was where they revealed a new set of posters to spark a new flame of excitement throughout the many fans of Star Wars gathered there. They released five posters with iconic characters from the Star Wars Franchise; namely: Finn acted by John Boyega, Leia acted by the late Carrie Fisher, Rey acted by Daisy Ridley, Kylo Ren acted by Adam Driver, and Luke Skywalker acted by Mark Hamill. These posters when released immediately caught the attention of all fans since they were all the same, and it arose many questions and speculations. Disney made a great impact on keeping these posters subtle yet impossible to forget, by using the same color schemes and by putting the characters faces half showing.
The first of the five posters released was the one of Finn acted by John Boyega. Finn originally named, “FN-2187,” was another mass produced clone from the First Order, originally to serve this new form of government that had at once been reduced to only a few survivors, to panning and conquering the Imperial Legacy and reclaiming dominion. These clones were mass produced and trained to be stormtroopers and defend this reinstated empire and protect the leader, Snoke. In the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we see that Finn is having a different response to what normal clones would and we see him depart from what he has been programmed to do, and he joins the resistance that is fighting against this new empire, to gain his own freedom. During this movie we see him receive another man’s resistance jacket, Poe Dameron, and he keeps it as his own. We now see this same jacket in this poster, however it is now colored a crimson red color instead of the primary color of the jacket being brown with some red breast pocket flaps. This is the only noticeable change to
Finn’s character persona.
Continuing on to the second of the posters released was the one with the late actress Carrie Fisher’s character Leia. Leia or formally known as “Princess Leia” and now known as “General Leia,” is presented here. She is the twin sister tothe protagonist Luke Skywalker, raised in a political family and then reunited with her brother in the original trilogy of the Star Wars franchise. Here we see her in a robe with the same color as the previous poster; it is crimson red. Nothing particular sticks out to the audience of her pose.
Moreover, the third of the posters was the one where we see another protagonist of this series Rey acted by Daisy Ridley. Rey was introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as a scavenger on the planet of “Jakku.” During the movie she harbors a fugitive droid BB-8, and is drawn into a big conflict that later makes her realize that she is meant for something greater than staying on her planet and being a scavenger. She realizes that she is “Force Sensitive,” basically meaning she is able to use the “Force,” and learn on what it means to use and harness this ability. At the end of the film she reaches the main protagonist Luke whom everyone is searching for and hands him Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber, a weapon made and used by “Jedi”. Now in the poster we see Rey with a new “Jedi” robe. As well it has the color of crimson red an ordinary “Jedi” robe would be brown, and she is holding a lightsaber. This arises the question, does she become a “Jedi Master?” Or does she give in to the “dark side” and become a “Sith?” Is she wielding that very same lightsaber that she gave to Luke at the end of the aforementioned film? This poster makes the audience speculate on different possible scenarios.
Moving on, the fourth poster was that of Kylo Ren acted by Adam Driver. Kylo Ren was also introduced in The Force Awakens as one of the main antagonists. His whole purpose is to as well find the whereabouts of Luke so he can report it back to his leader and master Snoke. He is later revealed to be the son of Leia and Han Solo, another resistance fighter. He was turned to the “dark side of the Force,” after being taught to be a “Jedi” by Luke himself. In this poster we see Kylo with his usual armor the difference is that it has the same crimson red as the other characters. He is also is wielding his crossguard lightsaber, an ancient design that allows him to operate it safely. It arises the question of, what is he going to do? Is he going to stay a “Sith?” Or will he come back to the “light side of the Force?”
Lastly, the fifth of the posters is that of the protagonist Luke Skywalker acted by Mark Hamill. Luke is the last remaining “Jedi.” He went to exile according to the dialogue of The Force Awakens, and everyone is trying to search for him. We see that after around 30 years Luke is finally located, at the end of the film. We see here in this poster that Luke is wearing an old “Jedi” robe. Again instead of it being the original color of brown it is crimson red. What does this mean? We ask ourselves. Also, he as well is wielding a lightsaber. Maybe he will use his father Anakin’s lightsaber to fight of again the “dark side of the Force.” WIth these posters there is a lot of speculation that it leaves us with.
Overall, Disney did an outstanding job in keeping the audience’s excitement about this new movement moving forward. The motif of the characters clothes being colored crimson red makes us speculate if they are all supposed to tie together. I believe that Disney could have done more to the posters and give us other specific details to help in our own fan theories and imagination. However, for their intended purpose of not revealing a drastic amount of information to spoil the movie, Disney did an outstanding job of keeping our minds running around and eagerly expecting new media and information about the movie that is to come on December 15, 2018.
