“I love this journey. I love that even more than the physical transformation, I’ve been able to COMPLETELY change my mentality. Yes, I still have doubts and insecurities. Plenty of them, in fact. But I look at myself and see a capable, strong woman. Taking my body and my life into my own hands is the single most EMPOWERING thing I’ve done in my life.”
Morgan Bartley, (AKA Morganlosing on social media) posted this photo on her Instagram in September of 2017 showing a side by side comparison of herself before and after she lost a significant amount of weight. There is such an obvious difference when looking at each picture individually. The big smile on her face shows how proud she is of her accomplishments, and most people who struggle with weight loss want to feel that kind of happiness. To be able to take control of yourself is a challenge that a lot of people face. Plus, she has confidence showing off her smaller body in just a sports bra and leggings. What’s better than feeling confident in your own skin? Ethos takes a big role in her photo because it appeals to the people who want to lose weight and/or trying to lose weight. When the topic of weight loss is being discussed, people included in that particular group become more sensitive to it. And Morgan is such an inspiration to many people. Morgan had struggled with being overweight for many years before she had VSG (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) when she was nineteen. She is now twenty years old , so in one year she lost 115 pounds. “Vertical sleeve gastrectomy is surgery to help with weight loss. “The surgeon removes a large portion of your stomach. The new, smaller stomach is about the size of a banana. It limits the amount of food you can eat by making you feel full after eating small amounts of food.” Most people think that getting weight loss surgery is an ‘easy way out’. But it completely changes a person’s body. There are also a lot of complications that can happen during surgery especially if you are and overweight/obese person. In order for someone to lose weight after getting VSG, dieting has to be a priority and an active lifestyle would make it even more effective. She completely changed her eating habits, and started exercising to lose the weight. She talks about how much stronger she became as a person because of the significant changes she made for herself mentally and physically. She doesn’t advertise products for companies that do not actually work. She just shows herself, smiling, proud of her accomplishments. And it is a really effective thing when she puts herself out there for many people to see because it motivates to want to lose weight. Not only does it help motivate those that need that push to make a change in their lives, but it also motivates Morgan. She is able to keep track of her progress and when she sees her follower’s reactions or comments, she continues to work harder and keep on going.  Most of the people who follow her on her social media are people who have had VSG, people who struggle with weight loss, or people who just need that extra motivation. A lot of people change their mindset when they see how hard someone else has worked. Because most people need to see what’s possible before actually doing something for themselves, otherwise we never get our heads around it. She was also featured in People magazine. She talked about the struggles she went through when she was trying to lose weight. Morgan says, “I realized, ‘There’s so many things that i want to do in my life, and I’ll be damned if my weight is the thing that prevents me.’” Many overweight people in the world get held back from doing things that they want to do. Things like going to an amusement park and not being able to go on a ride because of a weight limit. Another thing is going out with friends and not knowing whether or not you’ll be able to fit in a chair. And most of the time people just don’t have the confidence to just go out and have fun with their friends and family because they do not feel comfortable in their body. The reason why her followers are inspired by her is because she’s honest. She knows when she is slacking, and then later on continues to make improvements. She even talks about the difficulties that she faces even though she has come a long way on her social media. She has her rough times but doesn’t give up, she has her downfalls, and then progresses. She shows what a big difference she has made with herself and her body. So many of this generation are struggling with obesity and weight loss. The point of her post is showing that changes can be made in time, without even realising that there is a change. She has 161K followers on Instagram who watch and support what she has done to change her lifestyle. Many of those followers have been inspired by Morgan because of the positivity and motivation that she spreads. Her post if for the people who are struggling with trying to lose weight. She is a real and genuine person who can relate to other real life people who have suffered the same issues. It’s an amazing thing to have such an inspiring public figure like Morgan to share what she has done in her life. Morgan, like many other people who have told their weight loss story, is a fresh reminder that no matter what kind of difficulties a person faces, it’s possible to reach the goal of living a healthy lifestyle. It isn’t an easy process, but it’s easier to try and change your life, than to regret never trying later on in the future when you feel like it’s too late.
