Do you remember what it was like being a teenager in high school curious about sex? But going to your parents was not exactly ideal since it can be awkward talking to your parents about sex, right? Or imagine if women did not have control over their own body. How would that affect our society?

Teenagers are in a critical time in their lives where they want to be able to explore the world around them and to become their own person. They go through changes that they may not understand and will most likely be too embarrassed to talk to anyone about their issues. Teenage pregnancy is on its rise, alongside the rise of STDs and aids. Not everyone has the opportunity to grow up in a home where they feel safe discussing their sexual health, which leaves curious uninformed teens to make decisions that are bad for their health. Planned Parenthood has been the U.S. nation’s leading providers of sex education and health care that is affordable to others (Planned Parenthood). There are Americans today that believe that Planned Parenthood should be defunded due to some misconceptions.

Pro-life Americans come to a disagreement with women being able to have abortions. The pro-life community strongly believes that Planned Parenthood should stop being funded by the government. They do not support the government funding their tax money towards an establishment that services abortion. Many people who are pro-life believe that abortion goes against their religious beliefs and others perceive abortion as a cold blood murder. “Those who support abortion view it as a right required for social equality for all women; those who oppose it see it as a threat to motherhood, morality, and social cohesion” (Harvey, Beckman, & Bird, 1998). However, the fact of the matter is Planned Parenthood is not breaking any laws. Women should be able to abort early pregnancies if they choose to not have the baby, and they should be allow to abort them if the baby is causing health complications. In early pregnancy abortions the fetus is only a few weeks old which means its body of cells may not be fully developed. Also, if a baby is causing health complications for the mother then it is only moral to let the mother decide on the next step that she has to take in the pregnancy that will only be affecting her body.

Many people who are prolife and that do not want to fund Planned Parenthood believe that abortions should not be legal because if one plans on having sex, then they should be “grown” enough to face the consequences. First, it should be known that teenagers are curious and will always be that way until they explore their curiosity. With that being said, if Planned Parenthood is defunded then teenagers will lose their greatest source of accurate sex education that will keep them informed on the topics that they have burning questions on. Defunding Planned Parenthood will only hide all of the important sex education that teenagers need in order to make the right decisions with their sexual health. People cannot expect teenagers to know what to do with their sexual health if they have no idea on what is happening with their own bodies. Planned Parenthood should be able to continue to inform curious teenagers on sex education because hiding them from it will only cause them to make the wrong decisions in their life.

Planned Parenthood is the life saver of many women because of its affordable health care, part of which is affordable birth contraceptives for women everywhere. There are many different reasons as to why a woman would want to go on birth control, whether it is for hormonal balance or simply because she is not ready to have offspring. Planned Parenthood gives women access to taking control of not only their bodies, but control of their whole life course. Women are not the only people who get to benefit from Planned Parenthood, as they publically state “Planned Parenthood’s doors are open to everyone — regardless of gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation” (Planned Parenthood). With that in mind, they provide care for men’s health as well such as cancer screenings, vasectomies, infertility screenings, etc. Planned Parenthood is the only resource for help for many disadvantaged people, men and women, who are not able to afford health insurance.

It is completely immoral to defund a service that serves to let people take control of their health. Planned Parenthood does not exist for the sole purpose of “murdering babies,” it exists to give women the chance to choose their own decisions with their body. Their service is crucial to the future generations of teenagers who are confused about their bodies and want answers from a professional, rather than facing an embarrassing conversation with a relative. Sex education is an important topic that everyone must be informed on, even if they do not plan on being sexually active. The knowledge of knowing how STDs and other sex diseases can be contracted other than sex can be a life saver for many. Planned Parenthood is a much needed service that can harm people if it is defunded, as many people’s lives depends on their affordable healthcare.
